Love is not Stationary
We like to imagine love as solid and unyeilding. Except that if you have ever had your heart broken, you know that this simply is not true. Love changes. It moves. It ebbs and flows. It is ALIVE.
There is risk involved in our human relationships. There is a very real possibility that you could be working hard to move toward a person while at the same moment, they are moving away from you. This reality can make loving someone really scary.
If we apply what we experience in our human relationships to a relationship with God, we may fear loving a God who doesn’t love us back. Let me tell you dear one, this cannot be further from the truth. The reality is that God is not human and his love is not either. We read in passages like Psalm 139:7-10, Romans 8:39, and Hebrews 13:8 that God’s love for us is unchanging.
Love has evidence
Love is visible. When you love someone, then you do things that demonstrate this love. If you don’t, it’s very plausible that this “love” of yours will be called into question. Scripture tells us that we love because he loved us first and the way he demonstrated that love was by sacrificing Jesus for the sin of the world. Love requires sacrifice and it’s hard work.
Love is Commanded
God knows us and how we love. He knows that Love requires action and that it won’t come easy to our broken and sin filled hearts. He knows that we will be tempted to love only ourselves and neglect those around us and Him. This is why love is commanded in scripture. Things that come naturally, are not commanded.
